It appears that the key word term “phone counseling” can apply to a number of different situations, one like that described in the job application below. By the way, that job has been filled.

Seattle Education jobs

Phone Counseling position -Company: AppleOneLocation: SeattlePosted on: August 19, 2008

Job Description:

Phone based counselor position for a rapidly growing company Downtown Seattle. This position will be assisting people on the phone with committing to a healthier lifestyle. You will be coaching them on life plans, strategies and life changes. It is an ergonomic environment with a great view of the sound. Very friendly and offers great advancement opportunities! You also have the ability to work from home after 90 days of training.

Requirements:

Must have a four year college degree. Sociology or Psychology emphasis preferred.Must have great phone skills and ability to deal with people in stressful situations.

Must have good data entry skills as well as being able to multi-task while navigating a computer system.

Must be fast paced, energetic and enthusiastic.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

However, phone counseling is primarily associated with the provision of mental health counseling services.

Phone counselors might be volunteer crisis line workers, coaches like the above, or the mental health kind of phone counselors, and I am sure there are many other designations.

I have heard peers talk about phone counseling for several years, but did not consider it an option for myself until writing and researching phone counseling pages for my counseling website.

That research lead me to other research that indicates that phone counseling has value to clients engaging in it and is also demonstrating some research value for depression, weight loss, smoking cessation, and even PTSD, which I would not normally consider amenable to phone counseling.

Phone counselors may do credit counseling, triage, customer service, and intake counseling.

And your counselor may want you to do some homework to get your success going, which might include reading an excellent book called Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans, Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. who are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan.

They have culled the neuroscientific literature for information on how we can keep our brain fit, which encourages neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, or the daily growth of new brain cells and the constant rewiring of neurons into new circuits as we learn. (Neuroplasticity).

We keep our brain fit, whether we are phone counselors or phone counselees by attending to the pillars of brain fitness, physical exercise, nutrition including omega 3 fatty acid and antioxidants, sleep, stress managment, and novel learning experiences.

Novel learning experiences are the kind of learning which we experience learning a new language, or a new instrument.

Novel learning also happens with certain of the commercially available computerized brain fitness programs, like Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro, Lumosity, and the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program.

An online counselor would be wise to instruct clients to involve themselves with any of those three tools, because the success clients experience will carry over to other areas of their work.

With the advent of the internet, there are so many types of online degree programs available that you have the option to choose which ones you would like to take. The technology of the internet provides you with the variety of online degree programs and the different institutions that offer them. For example, if you wish to take a foreign language degree program, you can enroll in an institution that enables you to speak and practice that language with someone whose first language is that. Learning French online, for example, you will practice such language with someone who speaks French as a first language. Learning the diction and way it is said will be easier and more native, so to speak.

Some of the other types of online degree programs include the following: Business Degrees-which include Accounting and Finance, E Business, Human Resources, IT Management, Business Administration, Criminal Justice- Computer Security, Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Homeland Security, Education which includes General Teaching Courses, Special Education and other teaching certification, Culinary arts like Hotel and Restaurant Management and Kitchen Management and the like, Arts and Design like Animation, Graphic Design, Video Game Design and Fashion; Health care which encompasses Health care administration, Medical, Dental and Nursing degrees; Technology whose realm envelopes Computer Science, Database Technology, Software Engineering, Internet and Website Development. There are liberal arts programs that offer degrees in Psychology, Photography and Film and Visual Arts, Communications Technology and Journalism, Social Sciences like Sociology, Anthropology, Geology and Geography. There are schools that offer degrees in public work related programs like Parks, Recreation and Fitness Studies, Public Administration and Social Service, Security and Protective Services. These are but some of the online degrees offered in the web by different universities from all over the world. You can even get technical degrees online for the following courses: Commercial Truck Driving, Fire Sciences, Mortuary Science, Tourism, TV and Radio Broadcasting, Cosmetology, Gun Smithing and some others as well.

Online degree programs are for those people who may have busy schedules or are already in the workforce but would like to have an undergraduate or post graduate degree. An online degree program can be flexible enough for them to continue with their work alongside getting their degree by doing the course requirements at their spare time. Not all online degree programs offer this so it is best to check what the requirements are. The different types of online degree programs enable everyone to finish with a degree. Technology has made the world a better place in this manner

Benjamin Franklin once quipped that there are two certainties in life – death and taxes. But as every college student knows, life also has a third certainty – rising tuition. At most schools, tuition increases at a rate of about 3-5% per year. On average, the cost of one-year’s worth of school, including tuition, housing, transportation, and other fees, amounts to about $12,000 per year at a public school and $32,000 per year at a private school. That means that the cost of a bachelor’s degree is anywhere from $50,000 to a staggering $125,000. Still, even with the rising cost of education, there are several promising signs for college students (and their parents).

Perhaps the most widely televised indicator is the bill recently passed in Congress that will allocate more money for Pell grants. Currently, recipients of federally-funded Pell grants get $4,310 each year. The bill, which passed 78-18, would raise that amount to $5,400. The bill would also provide loan forgiveness to students who take jobs in public service following graduation and make payments for ten years.

What this means is that more Pell grant recipients – typically, the poorest college students – will get a significant boost from the federal government in the form of financial aid that does not have to be repaid. As such, these students can reduce their need for financial aid that does need to repaid – namely loans. For more information about this bill as well a subsequent bill that targets the financial aid application process and the problem of conflicted interests between banks and colleges, see “Senate Votes to Increase Grants, Loans.”

A second promising sign is the recent move by Amherst College to eliminate student loans entirely and replace them with scholarships. This move provides greater flexibility for both the school and prospective students. On the one hand, it allows Amherst to draw on a broader pool of applicants – not just the ones who can pay for school outright or who can be reasonably expected to repay loans. On the other hand, it grants students greater flexibility after graduation.

“Too often, students who graduate from college with debt feel compelled to make career choices based in part on their need to pay off their student loans,” said Tom Parker, dean of admission and financial aid. “Graduates from low- and middle-income families should have the same array of career options as graduates from upper-income families.”

In doing away with student loans, Amherst joins other notables like Princeton and Davidson, who have likewise replaced student loans with scholarships. Hopefully, the move by Amherst and others will open up a dialogue at other institutions and herald similar moves in the near future. To read more about how Amherst intends to implement (and pay for) its new program, see “Amherst Cuts Loans in College Aid.”

The third and final indicator is perhaps the most anecdotal but also the most promising of the three, at least potentially. It deals with the long-standing gripe of both students and faculty at colleges and universities around the country – namely, the price of textbooks. Well, it seems one professor has finally had enough. Ron Hammond, a sociology professor at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah, announced recently that he will no longer use textbooks in his courses. In “Textbook Prices Too Much, So UVSC Professor Eliminates Their Use,” Hammond said, “I think it’s immoral because of the cost of it.” Instead, he’s tailoring his classes to cover similar material by drawing on other sources, such as those available for free online, and by opting for his own tests and questions rather than those provided by the textbook.

While Hammond is only an isolated case – at least for now – he does represent a growing number of disaffected teachers who are looking for alternatives to the overpriced textbooks provided by a handful of well-established publishers. If other professors follow suit – and it is almost certain they will – publishers will need to respond or risk losing a lucrative but increasingly hostile market. If they don’t, they could see migration en masse to textbook-less courses such as those offered by Professor Hammond, leaving behind a stack of high-priced but now worthless textbooks, which would give disgruntled college students something they’ve clamored for for years – a good old-fashioned book burning.

Today’s courses in complementary medicine are not at all like what some may believe to be. A matter of fact, while there is a growing number of healing arts schools that provide these and other holistic health programs, some traditional colleges and schools have begun offering integrative medicine courses to those interested in treating patients holistically.

For example, were you aware that courses in complementary medicine are offered to the general public; as well as to healthcare providers and medical students? In addition to reaching a broad educational base, complementary medicine courses can be taken both online and at physical campus locations. And will sometimes provide community-based training programs to those interested in home herbal remedies, organic gardening, and self-massage techniques, and more.

Some of the more popular courses in complementary medicine include botanical medicine, nutrition and health, Ayurveda, and massage therapy, among others. In herbal (botanical) medicine, students are taught the foundations of the healing art; including studies in the history and philosophy of botanical medicine, how to prepare formulas, research, and toxicology.

If integrating holistic nutrition into your scope of practice appeals to you, then courses in complementary medicine that entail holistic nutrition might be right for you. Typical subject matter entails macro and micronutrients, phytonutrients, supplements and vitamins, whole foods, and patient communications, and other related studies.

Some courses in complementary medicine may lead to a certificate, diploma or a degree. For instance, there are a number of alternative health programs that are very comprehensive in nature. Students enrolled in these courses of study gain extensive education and clinical training in applied biomedical sciences in complementary medicine, homeopathy, reflexology, holistic nutrition, health psychology and sociology, bodywork therapies, aromatherapy, and herbal medicine, among others.

Students aspiring to become professional practitioners in naturopathy, homeopathy, chiropractic, Oriental medicine or massage therapy should note that these courses in complementary medicine vary in program length, tuition cost, and prerequisites. Therefore, it is always wise to explore the field in which you are interested, and what education is necessary prior to applying to the particular course of study.

you (or someone you know) are interested in learning more about these or other natural health courses, let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore courses of complementary medicine near you.

About the Author
Peter Roche de Coppens has dedicated the last 50 years of his life to the study of spirituality, the awakening of spiritual consciousness, holistic education and holistic health. Prayer was the vehicle through which he was healed of a severe motorcycle injury that left him crippled when the best medical authorities of the USA, Italy, and Switzerland concluded that he would remain handicapped for the rest of his life. This was his introduction to another form of medicine and healthcare.

For the ensuing 40 or more years, he has continued to study, practice, and refine various approaches to prayer and to holistic health and wellness. Through his own personal experience, which changed the course of his life, he learned that the next great, ?qualitative step? in medicine and healthcare is the integration of the spiritual dimension. With graduate degrees in sociology, anthropology, and psychotherapy, Dr. Roche de Coppens teaches at East Stroudsburg University since 1970.

He also taught at other universities including the Sorbonne University (Paris) and McGill University (Montreal). He now works as a spiritual and medical consultant for GUNA in Rome and Milan, Italy. He was also a Consultant to the United Nations. He authored more than 40 books, numerous articles and, since 1991, conducts a TV program, ?Soul Sculpture?.

Theoretical Approaches to Learning Art

?Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.?

Picasso

As educational leaders, it is our task to enhance learning with the theories that we learn throughout our educational experiences so our children as Picasso so nicely put it could keep their imagination and continue being artists for the rest of their lives. Art is “the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others” according to Britannica Online. In the broadest sense art is the one subject that has stayed closest to the older Latin meaning, which roughly translates to “skill” or “craft,” and from an Indo-European root meaning “arrangement” or “to arrange.” The purpose of this article is to explore the applications of eight to ten theories and use them to teach art education, while explaining how the information contained within the matrix created, could be transferred, and implemented to the art education program, while evaluating the pros and cons of each theory to the arts.

Theories

In the 21st century the educational system of the United States of America is in a process of change, in which it is merging and integrating new curriculums, theories, and programs into the system. All of the programs that have been created are focused on minority students, women, and students who have shown in one way or another that are at risk of not having the requirements to succeed in this educational system. Yet the techniques required for teacher to interact with the students has also been changing from writing to typing, books to computers; chalk boards to white boards; lecturing to team work.

Philosopher-educator John Dewey suggested that Americans face a choice between education as a function of society and society as a function of education. . . .Democracy demands the latter and requires citizens to develop the capacity to interpret, understand, and analyze knowledge, as well as to effectively communicate information, ideas, and concepts. (Romanowski, 2006, 9A)

Yet, theories are not permanent. They change due to our needs, culture, and beliefs for workable or accurate explanations of what the truth and purpose of education (p. 4). This may be because a theory according to DeMarrais and LeCompte (1999) is the ?way we organize and explain the world we live in? (p. 3). Throughout history, our social and cultural beliefs have been influencing the educational system with a range of social theories that include but are not limited to Functionalism, Marxism, Interpretivism, and Post-modernism, which have also influenced art. Geertz (1998) states that ?these approaches place great importance on presentation of the ?multiple voices? of all participants ? especially less powerful participants such as women, members of minority groups, and students? (DeMarrais and LeCompte, 1999 p. 38). In other words, art education, science education, mathematics, and knowledge in general are important for all individual, no matter the sex, age, ethnicity, or social status. The learning theories used today in schools are not limited to social learning theory, behaviorism, cognitive dissonance, contiguity theory, cooperative learning, Gardner, Piaget, Situated learning, Skinner, Vygotsky, Weiner, and Constructivism among others.

Interpretive theory

The interpretive theory states that school planning requires a systematic plan that has predetermined objectives or standards like the NCLB Act of 2001, since written rules and procedures, hierarchy of authority, impartial treatment of students, hiring, have characterized it and advancement based upon official credentials of teachers. The function of our schools is to give the students the tools they need so in the future they would be able to make money, have technology and have the power to teach others what they would need for the future making them available for each student, teacher, and staff. This learner believes that the USA educational system is attempting to put together an ideal educational system with Bush?s implementation of the No Child Left behind Act of 2001.

Under this law, every child in every racial, economical, and demographic group in every public school of the nation must improve their test scores in math and science standardized tests. According to King-Sears (2005), the phrase ?highly qualified teacher? used to ?mean those who were fully certified and extraordinarily effective in teaching students? (p. 187) but today according to the NCLB guidelines a ?highly qualified teacher will have a bachelor?s degree, be fully certified, and prove they know the content they teach? (p. 187) by taking content specialized examinations. Teachers must be able to help children connect their learning to their own experiences and provide opportunities for students to manipulate and use resources to maximize academic growth. Art education is a tool used by teachers in every content area to help students connect the content learned to their own personal experiences.

Change Theories

According to Shapiro (2005), a theory of change refers to ?the causal processes through which change comes about as a result of a program?s strategies and action.? These theories explore the reasoning that leads program leaders to their inferences about how changes happen. Most of there theories of change requires ?backward mapping? or identify the outcomes of a program. According to Shapiro (2005), the theories of change are both explicit and implicit and most include:

Frame the specific problems to be addressed Frame their intervention goal Identify processes through which change happens Describe their strategies, principals and specific methods for intervention Delineate short-and long-term intended effects

Trait theory

The trait theory states that individuals are born with a series of inherited characteristics that gives a person the sufficient combination of traits that are suited for life, these traits can also be measured through the individual?s ability to perform a series of tasks or skills that will allow them to be efficient. This theory originated in the nineteenth century, when Gregory Mendel discovered that genes and inheritance played an important role in the characteristics and trait that an organism possessed. As the years passed, researchers focused into trying to discover the traits wanted for a particular task. In our case, many researchers focused on identifying the traits or skills needed to be successful in art.

In 1950, Myers & Briggs, a mother-daughter team, created a survey test that could identify sixteen traits that are thought to be inherited by simply answering a series of questions found at http://cbae.nmsu.edu/~dboje/teaching/490_ps1/step_1.htm . In 1974, Stogdill wrote a handbook in which he is able to identify a series of traits and skills that make a good artist such as creativity, diplomacy (that person can be tactful with others), clever, persuasive, observant, conceptually skilled, knowledgeable, organized, and a fluent speaker. Lots of other traits have been added to this theory depending on the model and organization that is implementing it. While other researchers like Machiaveli, McGregor, McClelland, Katz, Yukl, Flanagan, Bennis, and Boje continue to study and create more models based on inherited traits. While the new scientific discoveries on genes, characteristics, psychology, and chromosome dominance create more questions on the existing trait theories. Some of the questions this learner has are: 1) Does an artistic traits dominant or recessive. 2) Will scientists be able to identify a creativity gene? 3) Can a person with heterozygous genes be able to acquire and develop the traits or skills they would posses if their genes where homozygous? 4) Can we identify artists with a simple test?

Multiple Intelligence Theory
